SAY NO TO FORCED MOULTING
The forced moultingused to increase egg production in the poultry industry, is highly detrimental to animal welfare, causing severe physical and psychological damage to birds, increasing disease and risks of human contamination by Salmonella.
public health and animal welfare
In addition to the direct damage to the birds, forced moulting poses a serious risk to public health, as it increases the contamination of eggs with dangerous bacteria. A number of countries have banned the practice, including European Union y United StatesThe Commission has also identified the risks for both animals and consumers.
The most common effects include:
Severe stress and immune damage
Deprivation of feed and water causes extreme stress, weakening the immune system, increasing disease and risks of Salmonella contamination.
Weight loss and physiological damage
Forced moulting causes drastic weight loss, severe organ atrophy and liver and ovarian damage. It affects health, increases mortality and reduces productive capacity.
Abnormal behaviour
Extreme stress induces severe behaviours such as excessive pecking and cannibalism, indicating high psychological distress. Studies link this to anxiety, depression and impaired animal welfare.
Deterioration of bone structure
Forced moulting causes bone decalcification due to excessive calcium mobilisation and lack of essential nutrients. This increases bone fragility, leading to fractures and affecting their quality of life and general health.
