Cage-free commitment

Battery cages are one of the cruelest systems for animals. In Peru, 98% of laying hens live in a space equivalent to the size of an A4 sheet of paper, where they cannot even spread their wings. This causes high levels of stress and frustration, resulting in aggressive behaviour such as pecking at themselves or other birds. To prevent this, their beaks are cut off without anaesthetic. The lack of movement leads to brittle and weak bones, as well as increasing the risk of serious disease from bacterial infections.

Cage-free commitment

A cage-free commitment is an animal welfare policy that a company makes to transition to the exclusive use of cage-free 100% eggs throughout its supply chain.

The company, of any size, sets a deadline for implementation and publicly announces this measure on its social media and/or website.

More from 2500 companies Nestlé, Bimbo, Unilever, McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Starbucks, KFC, Marriott, Hilton, Sodexo and Mondelez International have already joined the initiative.

Animal welfare is no longer just a trend but a consumer demand.

Compromiso Verde, in collaboration with IPSOS Peru, conducted a survey on food consumption and cruelty in the egg industry in Peru. Some of the most relevant findings are detailed below:

0 %

of respondents expressed concern about the way food is processed, especially the treatment of animals in the industry.

0 %

of Lima residents expressed their opposition to the battery cage system used in egg production.

0 %

of the population considers the sale of eggs from caged hens unacceptable.

0 %

of respondents consider that the practice of confinement of hens in battery cages should even be banned.
