Why is this petition important?

How is it possible that the hotel industry in Peru be part of the suffering of thousands of animals?

The vast majority of hotels in Peru's major cities have failed to consolidate a cage-free commitment to allow laying hens to escape the worst practices committed in the egg industry.

In this way, thousands of hotels are part of an industry where chickens are tortured and confined in small, filthy metal cages, where they cannot even perform their most basic natural behaviours, such as fully stretching their wings. Often, their necks or wings become trapped in the cage, resulting in broken bones, deformities and severe feather loss. Some hens, exhausted or unable to move, are crushed to death.

This is unacceptable!

Hundreds of companies around the world are phasing out cages, including hotel networks that have already made global commitments to end this production system, such as Unilever, Nestlé, Aldi, Intercontinental Hotels, Sodexo, Mondelez, Costa Café and Barilla, among others. However, several major hotel chains in Peru have turned a deaf ear to the call to join the movement for the dignified treatment of animals and have refused to discuss the issue.

From Compromiso Verde, we have repeatedly contacted different hotels to reach an agreement on promoting the phasing out of the purchase of eggs from caged hens, but they did not pay attention to our communications, as well as to our proposals for a meeting, stating that they are not interested in changing suppliers at this time. That is to say, turned their backs on the obligation imposed by the current animal protection and welfare regulations (Law 30407).and they did not listen to our proposal to help the chickens.

As long as the eggs consumed in the hotels come from animal exploitation, they are omitting the GUARANTOR POSITION The company has a responsibility towards animals (numeral 5.1 of article 5 of Law 30407), in violation of its obligations to social responsibility and care for the environment, which every company has.

We are Compromiso Verde and we are working in Peru for the international cage-free movement. Join us and ask thousands of hotels to follow the example of the companies that have already committed to using cage-free eggs. Sign the petition and share it on all your social networks!
